SHRINE OFFICE HOURS Monday - Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM SHRINE OFFICE CLOSED DECEMBER 24TH & 25TH CHRISTMAS EVE & CHRISTMAS DAY DECEMBER 31ST NEW YEAR'S EVE
Potentate’s Message Oscar Cañedo, Ph.D.
Hello Everyone, Here we are in December, and the best of this Holiday Season to one and all. It's hard to believe that next month we will be installing our new elected officers for the 2019 Shrine year. I wish them all the success in fulfilling their duties and working in harmony. We have had a wonderful and successful 2018. My Lady Sarah and I thank you all for your kindness, cooperation, assistance and dedication to the children that need our help. "Children: Our Mission with Loving Care" has been exemplified time and time again by everyone being part of Al Bahr Shrine on both sides of the United States-Mexico border. There are no borders for Shriners International when it comes to treating children at our 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children. Thank you to the Appointed and Elected Divan, and Ladies for all your help. Special thanks to my Executive Aide Ill. Sir Ben Billena, Personal Aides, Chief Aide Dan Smith, and Assistant Chief Aide Dave Winesett, and all the Aides and to my unofficial mentors: Ill. Sir Don Wierman, and Recorder Emeritus Phil Johnson. Also, a big thank you to our Office Staff (John, Barbara, and Tim) for all your help. At the beginning of the year, January 19th,we had an outstanding Unit and Club Reception Chaired by Noble Dan Smith. This was followed by our very successful Potentate and Noblily Gala Chaired by Noble Steve Walker and Lady Leighanne. Thank you to the Director's Staff for all your hard work. We had many wonderful events throughout the year and our sincere thanks to our Divan members and their Ladies for making them possible. I will never forget our Potentate's Pilgrimage to the Mexican States of Sinaloa and Baja California Sur in the month of June. We had outstanding Ceremonials in Mazatlan, Sinaloa and San José del Cabo in Baja California Sur. The hospitality in Mexico was outstanding!! My sincere thanks to Arthur Serrano Romero and Noble Mario Posada for making the arrangements. And speaking of Ceremonials, our Spring and Fall Ceremonials at Scottish Rite were very successful as well as our Ceremonial in Tijuana, Baja California. We had a total of five (5) Ceremonials for the year. Our Al Bahr Shrine participation in the many parades such as the St. Patrick's Day Parade, Fourth of July, Brawley Cattle Call, and Mother Goose was very exciting. The support of our Unit and Clubs such as the Tin Lizzies, Clowns, Legion of Honor, Director's Staff, Islanders, Antique Cars, etc at the parades was nothing but great and my thanks for your participation. It was indeed a pleasure and honor for me to serve as Potentate for 2018. God Bless all who help children and their fellow man.

Chaplain’s Message - Hal Scott Profanity has become so common that many no longer consider it objectionable. It is printed in papers, used on camera, spoken in mixed company by both sexes, and used in the presence of children, as if God does not object. He does. God’s name is not to be treated irreverently. God forbade the ancient Israelites’ taking his name in vain. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain” (Exodus 20:7). God’s name is to be hallowed. Jesus said. “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our father in heaven, hallowed be your name” It may surprise you to know that profanity is more common in so-called Christian America than in heathen countries. Idolaters often have greater reverence for their gods than some persons do for the true and living God.

Our last Game Day of 2018 will be Thursday, December 27th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Wishing everyone peace on earth and good health. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a Happy New Year (hard to believe it’s almost 2019)! Stay well, keep smiling and let’s all count our many blessings! Looking forward to seeing you at the Holiday Luncheon! Remember Ladies…The more we get together, the happier we’ll be!
Past Potentate Cliff Richards and his lady Laura, were faithful supporters of the Al Bahr Shrine Hospital Transportation fund for many years, donating tens of thousands of dollars to its operation. Illustrious Sir Cliff was also instrumental in Al Bahr receiving yearly substantial donations from his father’s Clifton Richards Family Foundation, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Continuing in this faithfulness, the Richards’ children arranged to donate Cliff’s handicapped van to Al Bahr Shrine. With the assistance of Noble Chino Torres, the van was sold and the proceeds donated to the hospital transportation fund in memory of Cliff and Laura. A truly thoughtful gesture from the family to honor their parents and their devotion to the children entrusted to our care.
A tip of the fez to Robert Dockery for his continued work on the Shrine Center landscaping and irrigation. Thank you!!!

Hello, Nobles and ladies. December brings us multicultural celebrations withersoever dispersed around the globe. Hannukah, Las Posadas, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, St. Silvestre’s Day, Namage, and dozens more are celebrated in December. We surely have cause for much celebration. We have much to celebrate as Masons and Shriners. Blue Lodges presented Hiram Awards in recognition of the ongoing unsung efforts of brother Master Masons. Many are also members of our Shrine or should be. Congratulations to all with grateful thanks for your superb efforts recognized by your lodges. While December is generally viewed as the end of a year, it is also the beginning of a new term. Hope for the future, plans that have spent years maturing get ready for implementation, and then elections, and installation of the Officers of our Blue Lodges, concordant bodies such as Scottish Rite and York Rite, and Eastern Star. I have been attending a number of these awards and installations. Among them: My Easter Star sisters and brothers warmly welcomed me home to my Chapter, La Paloma Star. I was honored to present the colors at the Coronado Lodge Hiram Award of Brother Roberto Reyes; we shared similar professional experiences. Broke bread with Noble Hal Carter and Nobles of the Legion of Honor, and their ladies. I worked with Hal at the County since age 18. Al Bahr Shriners brings out the “fraternal” positive of our fraternity. I look forward to next year. All my best wishes to you and your family for the happiest holidays season, and with you, for you, all the blessings of the Supreme Architect of the Universe.

My first wife, Fran, and I enjoyed 42 years of marriage until her passing in 2005, and we had two daughters. My second wife is Barbara and we have just celebrated our 11th year of marriage. I am a Master Mason of Claude Morrison Lodge since 1978, where I am a life member. In 1980, I joined the San Diego Scottish Rite Bodies and Al Bahr Shrine. During my Shrine years, I have sponsored more than 40 new members and was awarded a life membership in 1982 for being the sponsor of 12 new members that year. I served 5 year on the elected divan, culminating with the honor of serving as your Potentate in 2016. I appreciate your consideration for election to the office of Potentate.
